The Authors

Family and friends may react in various ways; smother you with affection, ignore  you, become angry, silent, indifferent; these are all ways people communicate their emotions. Help them by talking openly and honestly about your cancer, your feelings, your fears, and your expectations. (Read about sex and cancer.) Honest, open communication can reduce fear and allow more normal relationships.

Share your experiences with family and friends; educate them about cancer and the risks they may face.

Do not listen to horror stories. Remove yourself from negative situations. Let others know you need to focus on the positive aspects of your life.

Read the list of questions to ask
your social worker or therapist about
communicating with your family and friends.
