| Children are so perceptive! They know right
away when something is wrong in their world. They feel frightened and insecure. They act
out. They regress. They trust us to tell them the truth - and that's what we should do
about cancer, too. Straightforward, light-hearted, age-appropriate discussions. No
promises that can't be kept. Just the facts, ma'am! If
your child is the one with cancer try to get into a support group right away so they know
they are not alone. Also, there are several good books written especially for children
that can ease the emotional trauma of diagnosis and treatment.
If you are the one with cancer, encourage your children to
help you. Helping you will empower them and reduce their fear of the unknown. Even the
youngest child can help by rubbing your back or patting your hand. Let them love you!
There are several good books and publications that can
help you talk with your children
about cancer. |
