| As a member of a 'cancer cluster' family and
a long-time cancer survivor, I have experienced the pain of grief and loss from an
inordinate number of deaths among family and friends. It
wasn't until lately, however, when I sustained several major losses in a short period of
time that I began to wonder why the pain of grief wasn't easier to bear. Usually when we
experience or 'do' something many times we get better at it - why isn't that the case with
grief?
As I analyzed my feelings to try to come to terms with the
crushing reality of my last loss, I realized that grief is supposed to hurt.
It is the price we pay for having relationships in our
lives - a matter of life balance. I came to acknowledge that I will gladly suffer the hurt
and pain of grief and loss as the payment for the love, good times, and wonderful memories
I have been privileged to share with those I love.
It was this realization that prompted me to write the
following columns on grief and loss.
